Day 20: The best laid plans

By 15 June 2015May 30th, 2023No Comments

It’s been a long day. We woke up at 4:30 A.M. and still had to scramble at the airport. I think it should be a rule that if you wake up that early people give you a break. Our taxi through company Blacklane was very accommodating, they even arrived a little early once I realized our flight left at 6:15 a.m. not 6:55 like I originally thought. Whoops.

When we arrived at the airport we waited in the “check-in” line for a good thirty five minutes. When we got to the front they told us it was not a check in line, but a check bag line and that all Ryan Air Check-in must be done online. So… After paying and additonal 165 Euro to check in and check my bag, we got our tickets and almost literally ran to the plane. We arrived at our gate with minutes to spare and walked on to the Tarmac to get on our plane. Stress, relieved.

We set down in Athens and took the Metro into the city getting off at the Panormou station. We couldn’t check in for another two hours but our host was gracious enough to let us drop off our very heavy bags. Thanks George! We walked to Vodaphone to get our Greek SIM card, we’ll be in Greece for almost nine days total so it makes sense to have one. On our way we noticed a large outdoor marketplace near our house. We decided to stop by after getting our phone to get some light snacks to take home.

Not much is going to happen today. We’re just to tired.

Still with some time to kill, we headed to a small restaurant we saw open behind the tents of the market place. We walked in and very greated by our server Vaya (I’m not sure of the spelling). She sat us down and informed us that the grill would not open until noon, so we ordered two salads and bread and waited. We were to tired to do much more.

While we waited we spoke to Vaya and she taught us simple Greek words that could help us get around. (1) Epharisto “Thank You” (2) Parkolo “Your Welcome” (3) Poly Kala “Very Good” and (4) Yasu “Goodbye.” She was very kind and told us about her life, gave us suggestions of things to see and even gave us free food. How great is that! Thank you Vaya for making our entrance into Athens warm and welcoming! Sorry for the selfie…

Aside from a quick dinner at a nice restaurant called Jonah’s, which was also great, we didn’t do anything today but plan for the rest stay here in Greece. So goodbye for now.

Cheers,
